The architectural style of this home reflects the client’s love of middle-eastern architecture, colloquially termed “Moroccan Modern,” with blocky shapes, broad plaster planes, inset openings, flat roofs, and earth tones. Two terraces – a winter terrace and a summer terrace – take advantage of views of the Monterey Bay and provide for year-round outdoor use. The building wraps around a large courtyard, which is centered on an historic oak tree, with an art studio and the garage creating corners for the space. Slab floors with radiant heat, spray foam insulation, a “cool” PVC roof, highly efficient windows and doors, and air-to-air heat exchangers help keep the home heated and cooled efficiently.
