BRET HANCOCK
ARCHITECT
Situated in a starlit pasture in Bonny Doon, California, this private observatory was designed and built to exacting standards for an owner who had done exhaustive research on observatory construction. The building required extremely precise orientation, a massively stable cast concrete base for the telescope, and thermal separation between the control room and the viewing room. The building was dimensioned to accommodate a prefabricated metal dome that has a motorized rotation of 360°. Unabashedly classical revival, it exists as a kind of yard folly and a novelty in the otherwise bucolic landscape.
